Winner of the Springer Award for Students
Nicholas Burns from the University of Aberdeen won the Springer Award for Students for his presentation on “Spatial Domain Focus Metrics Applied to the Automated Focusing of Marine Inline Transmission Holograms“. He presented several spatial domain focus metrics, often applied in conventional imaging systems. Each of these metrics has been explored to evaluate their strengths when applied to marine digital hologram reconstructions, and finally a new focus metric has been developed to provide robustness against existing modes of failure.

Synopsis
From the coastal regions of the world to its deepest oceans, significant challenges still face us in our drive to understand this unique environment and to exploit the natural resources contained within it. New techniques and instruments are continually being developed to help us explore and enhance our appreciation of the sea and how we depend upon it. Foremost amongst these is the increased use of optical techniques or photonics that help to us to extract information about the nature of the oceans, its constituents and its behaviour. This enhanced knowledge will enables us to use the oceans as a sustainable resource of minerals and food for the future.
“Blue” Photonics will focus on all aspects of optics and light in the oceans from basic optical phenomena to complex instrument design, for example, for monitoring of plankton or decommissioning of oil rigs. This will be a major forum for scientists and engineers to discuss these topics, to develop ideas for their own work, and buildup a network of colleagues for future interaction. The conference will highlight major topics in photonics applied to marine science and engineering starting from fundamental science through marine optics, optical metrology, biological optics, environmental optics to technology and instrumentation.
