Synopsis

After 20 years of active research and development of design and fabrication techniques, diffractive optics is approaching a status of mature technology – in addition to the ongoing fundamental basic and applied research, we can find diffractive optics in increasingly many applications which are either completely based on diffraction phenomenon or diffractive solution is remarkably more compact, light-weight, or cost-effective than its alternatives.
The EOS Topical Meeting on Diffractive Optics gathers the scientists and engineers working in the field of diffractive optics in industry or academic institutes. The scope of the meeting is to give the attendees a wide picture of the field, from fundamental modelling of light–matter interaction to design techniques and from fabrication techniques to novel applications.
The meeting will be preceded by workshops on diffractive optics on November 20, 2007.

Topics

This meeting will be the sixth in the series of EOS Topical Meetings on Diffractive Optics. The previous meetings took place in Savonlinna (1997), Jena (1999), Budapest (2001), Oxford (2003) and Warsaw (2005).
The main topics of the Barcelona meeting are Design, Fabrication, and Applications of diffractive optics. The subtopics that are covered by the three main topics include:

  • Modeling of DOEs by rigorous and approximate techniques
  • DOE design theory and techniques
  • Fabrication of DOEs
  • Characterization of DOEs
  • System integration
  • Modeling of optical systems that include DOEs
  • Programmable DOEs
  • Sub-wavelength structures
  • Photonic crystals
  • Novel materials
  • Metamaterials
  • Shaping and homogenization of optical beams
  • Diffractive optics for extreme wavelengths
  • Measurement techniques for near field of DOE
  • Diffractive optics for life sciences and security applications

Workshop

The meeting will be preceded by a workshop on Diffractive Optics on November 20. The workshop will cover many of the topics of the conference, and it will be held at the site of the meeting. Owing to the nature of the workshop only a limited number of participants can be accepted to the workshop. Therefore, special focus will be set on the bridging of fundamental research and applied sciences.

Optics modeling using LightTrans VirtualLab™ 3.5
H.Schimmel, LightTrans GmbH, Wildenbruchstraße 15, 07745 Jena, Germany

Modern optical engineering requires more and more the representation of
light with a full set of properties such as amplitude, phase, polarization
and coherence. Additionally, diffraction and interference effects must be
considered during simulation of light propagation. While already often
being a standard procedure in diffractive optics it is not common to
encounter such a wealth of information in commercial optical engineering
software. Hence, optical engineers working in the field of diffractive
optics would regularly need to program all necessary tools required for
their development. The workshop will demonstrate how the task of modern
analysis and design in optical system development, research and education
can be approached using the commercial software LightTrans VirtualLab™ 3.5.
Some of the subjects covered are:

  • Simulation of optical systems containing diffractive optical elements
  • Simulation of scattering on rough surfaces including import of measured surface data.
  • Design of refractive and diffractive beam shaping elements, diffractive beam splitters and diffusers using the Iterative Fourier Transform Algorithm (IFTA).
  • Simulation of polychromatic light and realistic light view.
  • Homogenization of Excimer laser and LED light using diffractive diffusers and lens arrays.
  • Illustration of optical effects for optics education.
  • Simulation of polarization and high NA systems.
  • Automatic adjustment of numerical parameters.
  • Rapid investigation of micro-optical systems
  • Simulation of laser beam propagation in optical systems and evaluation of laser beam parameters.
