BIAS - Bremer Institut für angewandte Strahltechnik

The Bremer Institut für angewandte Strahltechnik GmbH (BIAS) is an engineering and scientific research institute at the University of Bremen.

It was founded in the year 1977 with the support of the State of Bremen as a non-profit company with limited liability (GmbH). Since 1990 its main location is on the University Campus and it has been linked to the University by an agreement of cooperation.

Research, development and training is carried out in the fields of laser systems engineering, surface technology, coherent optical measurement, visual 3D measurement, quality assurance, laser safety engineering and system consultancy in response to contracts from both industry and government. For this work approx. 75 staff including approx. 45 scientists occupy 2.000 m² of laboratory and 600 m² of office space at two locations.

The annual turnover in the year 2002 was approx. 7 million Euro of which approx. 25 % were industrial orders.

Apart from projects within national and European framework, there are long established international links with research organizations and industrial companies.
