JEOS:RP: Special publication offer for all attendees of EOSAM 2008

All attendees of the EOS Annual Meeting receive a 20% discount on the publication rate for the e-journal of the EOS: the Journal of the European Optical Society - Rapid Publications (JEOS:RP, http://www.jeos.org/).

jeos_banner.pngThe paper submitted to JEOS:RP must be an original contribution that is connected to one of the topical meetings held at EOSAM 2008.

Deadline for paper submission to JEOS:RP: 01 December 2008.

The special publication fee for attendees of this event is 280 euros (instead of 350 euros).

 

Presentations of the EOS Workshop on Masters and PhD Education in Photonics (EOSAM2008)

Higher education in Europe is changing, with many, but not all countries adopting the Bologna model of a 3-year first degree, 2-year masters and 3-year PhD. New "European" masters programmes are emerging, and the nature of the PhD degree is changing, with an increased emphasis on professional skills. Many of the changes are driven by external influences and sometimes with little input from either university supervisors, or the students themselves. The goal of this informal workshop was to discuss these changes, and exchange ideas and experience to ensure that the very highest quality of masters and PhD education can be maintained.

More than 300 members attended Photonics21 Annual Meeting 2008

photonics21annualmeeting2008.jpgThis year's Photonics21 Annual Meeting, a successful event with interesting and promising discussions ended at the evening of December 9th at the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel in Brussels, Belgium.
The Board of Stakeholders elected Giorgio Anania, Chairman of Cube Optics AG, as a third vice-president, Eckhard Meiners, Managing Director of TRUMPF Laser Marking Systems AG, as the new chair of workgroup 2, following Peter Leibinger who stepped down as chair of WG 2 and finally Klaas Vegter, Chief Technology Officer Philips Lighting, as new chair of Workgroup 4, following Peter Stromberg, who as well resigned.

TOBIAS SCHMID, a PhD Candidate at CREOL - College of Optics & Photonics, University of Central Florida, has been selected as the 2008 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship awardee. Tobias' thesis supervisor is Jannick Rolland PhD, Professor of Optics and Computer Science, College of Optics & Photonics, CREOL, University of Central Florida. The award is expected to be presented at the SPIE Europe Optical Systems Design Symposium, 2-5 September 2008, Glasgow Calendonian University, Glasgow, Scotland, UK. The award will be a $5,000 cash grant supported by the Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship Fund.

ICO Galileo Galilei Award 2009

Rules applicable to the Galileo Galilei Award

1 - The Galileo Galilei medal of ICO is awarded for outstanding contributions to the field of optics which are achieved under comparatively unfavorable circumstances.

2.1 - The outstanding contributions in the field of optics should refer to:
- fundamental scientific questions or problems, or
- research or development of optical methods or devices, or
- scientific or technical leadership in the establishment of regional optical centers.

2.2 - "Comparatively unfavorable circumstances" refers to difficult economic or social conditions or lack of access to scientific or technical facilities or sources of information.

Student Innovation Award

The Work Group 7 - Photonics Research Education and Training of the Photonics21 Technology Platform have established a prize for students in the field of photonics in order to promote research in photonics especially related to R&D with industrial impact.

The first prize will be awarded at the Laser 2009 and the World of Photonics Congress at the opening session on the 15th June 2009. The award consists of a certificate, and for 2009 of a sum of 5000 € and a complimentary ticket for the World of Photonics Congress.

The award is sponsored by Photoncis21 members (companies).

Further funding of future awards is desired. The sponsors will be visible in newsletters (logo), on the website, and at the prize ceremony.
