Future-generation super-high-density optical data storage (European project SURPASS)Postdoctoral fellow (2 years) and Ph.D. student (3 years)The research project aims at the realization of a future super-high-density optical disc with a storage capacity well in excess of the current most advanced systems, e.g. Blu Ray or HD-DVD discs with a single-layer capacity of 15 - 25 GByte. Future storage systems need single layer densities of the order of several hundreds of GByte to manage ever increasing storage needs in the computer, streaming video and gaming environment. The project coordinator is the French-German company Thomson-Multimedia, with its R&D center based in Villingen, Germany. Further project partners are CEA-LETI form France, Imperial College London (UK), University of Neuchâtel (CH). The research to be carried out at Delft University for obtaining super-high-density storage media will focus on the electromagnetic theory of scanning spot formation, disc multilayer optimisation, cros-talk cancellation and general system architecture. RequirementsThe PhD candidates should have a Masters degree in Physics or Electrical Engineering. Knowledge of optics and lasers is recommended. General information:The Optics Research Group within the faculty of Applied Sciences is active in the field of wave propagation, diffraction and image formation. Apart from optical aperture synthesis for astronomical and space applications, current research topics are imaging with Terahertz radiation, subwavelength phenomena and lithography. Conditions of employmentThe employement conditions are those of TU Delft and can be found at the website http://www.tudelft.nl . TU Delft strives to increase the number of women in higher academic positions; women are thus especially encouraged to apply. Information and applicationFor further details on the position you are welcome to contact Prof. H.P. Urbach, phone: +31 (0) 15 – 27 86146 or: +31 (0)15 – 27 81444, e-mail: h.p.urbach at tudelft.nl or Dr. S.F. Pereira, phone: +31 (0) 2782474, e-mail: s.f.pereira@tudelft.nl |
