The Optics Research Group at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands is looking for a PhD student working in the fields of global optimization and computer modeling of the merit function landscape of optical systems. Our special emphasis will be on objectives for microlithography, which are the heart of the machines used in semiconductor industry to produce computer chips. Therefore, the 4-year research work will include a strong cooperation with Carl Zeiss SMT AG in Germany, a world leader in the design and production of lithographic objectives, who is partially funding the project.

n close collaboration with other members of the Optics Research Group, the PhD student will develop new design methods for optical systems, which take into account specific topological properties of the optical merit function landscape, e.g. relationships between local minima and saddle points.

Requirements:

MSc. degree in Physics or related fields (e.g. Mathematics, Chemistry, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering), affinity for computer modeling, proficiency in English (writing and speaking)
