Nanophotonics Summer School

16th June 2008 - 20th June 2008
Palacio de la Magdalena, Santander, Spain

There has been enormous interest, in recent years, in optical materials that are artifically structured on the micrometre and nanometre scale. Such materials have fascinating optical properties both from a fundamental point of view and with regard to future applications in photonic devices and materials. Current trends point toward a gauge shrinkage to reach the molecular scale making the molecule the yardstick.

The scope of the school is to introduce participants to concepts, methods, applications and the state of the art in micro- and nanophotonics and on the current trends towards molecular photonics. The school will focus on both the theoretical and experimental aspects of the current research in this field, with an eye to applications.

Programme

The programme will cover a wide range of topics centred on photonic science and technology both fundamental and applied. Thus, lectures will range from the production of materials and systems to the theoretical interpretation and the spectroscopic and microscopic analysis as well as the search for new functionalities and applications.

The topics to be covered include:

  • Electrodynamics in nano-environments
  • Photonic Band Gap, Photonic Crystals
  • Photonics of Quasicrystals, random and disorder systems
  • Plasmonics (and metal nanoparticles)
  • Semiconductor Nanoparticles
  • Molecules for nanophotonics (Synthesis and functionality)
  • Nanofabrication (and scale limits)
  • Single molecule spectroscopy
  • Single photon sources and detectors
  • Optical Microscopy (Near and far field)
  • Manipulation (Optical tweezers)
  • Optofluidics (Sensing through photonics)
  • Nanobiophotonics

Attendees:

Attendees of this course will be PhD students and postdocs specialising in micro and nano photonics and aiming at the reign of molecular photonics.

Co-located with the course a workshop will be held where participants will have a unique opportunity to show their own results and discuss them with the leading minds in the area.
