Publish in JEOS:RP

Presenters at the 4th EOS Topical Meeting on Blue Photonics – Optics in the Sea (Blue Photonics 4) are kindly invited to consider the submission of a manuscript about their research to the EOS open-access on-line journal JEOS:RP (Journal of the European Optical Society, Rapid Publications, www.jeos.org). A 20% discount will be applied to the author fee. JEOS:RP publishes articles about recent scientific research and technological innovation as well as review papers about a topic in science or innovation from the recent past. A contribution should be original and will be subjected to the journal’s standard anonymous peer review process for scientific quality. The average time-to-publication of the journal is of the order of 75 days. The copyright of a published paper resides entirely with the author. When submitting your manuscript, please, mention the research results were presented in Blue Phtonics 4.

The author fees, VAT excluded, are:
EOS-members                      280 Euro  (instead of 350 Euro)
non-EOS members               320 Euro  (instead of 400 Euro)

HOWEVER, it makes sense to check the prices from the booking system of the hotel. The proces in there may sometimes be cheaper than the above given rates!

In addition to these, Barcelona has many hotels and hostels in a wide range of prices. Internet searches can help such as Google or Booking.com. Be careful using unlicensed rentals through Airbnb because there have been recent crack-downs on cheap tourism. You can also check accommodation options at the student residency in the vicinity of ICM-CSIC. Campus Mar and Ciutadella are further away from ICM-CSIC but are closer to the city center.

Social Program

On Sunday, May 10, there will be a walking tour "Barcelona and the Mediterranean Sea from the Middle Ages to the XVIII century". This is a walk through 700 years of the history of Barcelona and its relationship with the Mediterranean sea. You will get to know the medieval port district of Vilanova del Mar with its "Cathedral of the Seas", the old Gothic quarter with its King´s Palace, the Cathedral and other medieval remains and the new fishermen´s district built over reclaimed land in the middle of the XVIII century. The tour is followed by a welcome drink and tapas. The approximated gathering time for the tour is 16.30. Conference dinner will be organized on Tuesday, May 12, in beachfront restaurant Barraca Barcelonetta, http://www.tribuwoki.com/en/restaurante/barraca-barceloneta/

Places to eat

Spanish food is great, and Barcelona has a wide range of choices of local, regional, national and international foods. However, floods of foreign visitors have had an eroding effect on general meal quality around touristic locations. When in search for a good meal, we suggest that you adhere to the following:

  • Eat where the locals do;
  • Do not eat on or close to Las Ramblas unless you want to pay a fortune for a plate of Aaargh;
  • Pealla is Spanish but Spain is a big country. Paella originated from Valencia and is not a specialty of Barcelona, although you’ll see it on offer everywhere. A word of warning: in general, do not expect a cheap, quickly made paella to taste good. A true paella takes hours to prepare and typically does not come out of a microwave. However, IF you manage to find a restaurant where you are required to order it hours in advance, go for it;
  • The Gothic Quarter and Barceloneta have many small tapas bars and other tasty surprises;
  • Hot chocolate with churros is a fall and winter treat worth committing a minor crime for.

Places to visit

Beside the regular treats such as Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, Parc Güell, and Casa Batlló, for instance, Barcelona has a wealth of museums and attractions to offer that are less famous but worth a visit:

For inspiration, take a look on this tourist guide. Taking the Barcelona Bus Turístic is a good way to visit many of these places while learning something under way. It’s actually quite nice and super convenient.
